A Holistic Approach to Well-being

The Institute for Salutogenesis recognizes that health is a lifelong journey. We adopt a holistic approach, supporting well-being at every stage—from the critical First 1000 Days of life through adulthood and into elderhood. Our strategy integrates the salutogenic model to strengthen individual and community health resources and address the social determinants of health at each life stage. By focusing on well-being and resilience, we aim to create a continuum of care that fosters long-term health and flourishing.

Introduction

Key elements of the initiative include:

  • Fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders

  • Providing an organizing framework and access to timely data

  • Promoting evidence-based practices to support early childhood development

  • Advocating policies that prioritize maternal, infant and early childhood wellbeing

  • Addressing medical and social determinants of health

  • Enabling targeted interventions responsive to each mother-infant dyad

Our Focus Across the Life Stages

  • The First 1000 Days: This pivotal period lays the foundation for lifelong health. Our initiatives aim to provide every child with the best start in life, focusing on comprehensive care that addresses medical, psychosocial, and environmental factors.

  • Childhood: As children grow, we provide tailored interventions that support their health and development. This includes promoting positive social relationships, learning opportunities, and a sense of belonging within the community.

  • Adulthood: We address the challenges and opportunities of adulthood by promoting healthy lifestyles, supporting mental health, and enhancing community engagement. Our goal is to help adults lead thriving lives.

  • Elderhood: We focus on ensuring a dignified and fulfilling later life by emphasizing social connections, meaningful activities, and health-promoting choices. Our initiatives aim to reframe the narrative around aging, highlighting the strengths and opportunities that come with this stage of life.

Key Principles

  • Opportunity for All: Every individual deserves the chance to flourish and possess the core capabilities to fully participate in society.

  • Lifelong Well-Being: By focusing on key life stages, we provide an optimal foundation for lifelong health and well-being.

  • Community Engagement: Active citizen participation is crucial for co-creating policies and programs that effectively assist individuals and families.

Our Approach

We integrate multi-level interventions and emphasize individual-centric assessment and care to ensure tailored support that meets the unique needs of each person. Key elements of our approach include:

  • Fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders

  • Providing an organizing framework and access to timely data

  • Promoting evidence-based practices

  • Advocating for policies that prioritize well-being

  • Addressing medical and social determinants of health

By embracing a comprehensive, life course approach to health, the Institute for Salutogenesis aims to lead a paradigm shift in health and well-being. We envision a future where every individual has the opportunity to achieve their best health across all stages of life.
